Qatar qualified as host of the upcoming World Cup but has never qualified otherwise. With gleaming new stadiums but a small population, the prospect of Qatar qualifying on merit had always been remote until now. After winning the last Asian Championship, they would've been one of the favorites to make it to the next world cup. 

INTERNATIONALS

Apart from the runners-up spot in the World Youth Championships in 1981, Qatar has failed to make much of an impact in FIFA tournaments. Recently though, they won the AFC Asian Cup 2019 and go into the World Cup on home soil as Asian Champions. They also have an Asian Games, 3 Arabian Gulf and 1 West Asian Football Federation title to their name. Bar one, all these titles have come in the last 20 years as QAFF has spent enormous resources to lift the level of the national team with the ASPIRE academy in the news for their work. 

DOMESTIC

Al Sadd with 15 titles are the leading team in the Qatar Stars League. They are also the only Qatari team to have won the Asian Champions League, once in 1988-89 and again in 2011. They finished third in the FIFA World Club Cup in 2011.Al Rayyan are their closest rivals with 8 crowns to their name.
